ONE FACT THAT UNITED STATE CITIZENS HAVE FORGOTTEN IS THERE IS ONLY SO MUCH MONEY. THE PIE IS FIXED. IF A DOLLAR IS SPENT ON THIS NEW BUILDING IT MUST COME FROM ELSEWHERE IN THE PIE. THE REST OF THE PIE USUALLY ITEMS THAT EDUCATE YOUR CHILD.
WHAT I WOULD SAY TO THIS GENTLEMEN IS DO YOU WANT US TO DO THIS IF IT CAUSE US TO ELIMINATE YOUR CHILD'S TEACHER SO HE IS PUT INTO A CLASSROOM WITH 35 STUDENTS?
THAT WILL END THE DISCUSSION WITH MOST INDIVIDUALS BUT THEM I DO NOT KNOW.

Why is the city of Easley planting trees in the middle of Pendelton Street? Going green is going dumb when there isn't enough roads for the traffic we already have.

This has less to do with politics than with the cutthroat nature of business nowadays, but this is as good a place as any to put it.
Rumor - I'll call it that now, since there's no way to confirm it short of corporate espionage - is trickling out that Kmart stores nationawide will all be closing by the end of this year, with the corporate brand disappearing from the Sears Holdings branding.
Lovely. Easley gets a new WalMart that actually adds a few jobs over and above what the old WalMart had, Pickens finally gets a WalMart that adds jobs to the county - and a lot of other jobs disappear.
There'll be a net gain in the county's retail jobs, but still ... as one who has always preferred KMart to WalMart for a variety of reasons, it would be a disappointment if the rumor turns out to be true.
Of course, despite liking KMart, I'm still ticked at their bankruptcy shenanigans from a decade ago, where they stiffed a lot of vendors (put several out of business, in fact, including a water bottler in Oconee County, by not paying their balances), then emerged from bankruptcy and bought Sears, rather than paying at least part of their old obligations.
What goes around, comes around I guess. But, like the old Winn-Dixie corporation (which now owns BiLo), this chain is going to leave a trail of devastation throughout the South, all in the name of stock dividends and corporate dollars.
We can only hope they'll get theirs in the end. I know which end I hope it is.

What in the world was Easley Police dept. thinking? you chase down armed robbers who has also shot at someone, lock one up, send two to the hospital, then don't have anyone guarding the ones in the hospital. Surely someone on that police force has enough common sense to see that this isn't going to work. Surprise, surprise those two left the hospital and now they are gone, hope city council is looking very closely at this. Hope these guys don't injure or murder someone now because it seems that EPD could be held responsible for not securing the criminals.

I read in the Greenville News thrown on my driveway Easley is constructing more bike paths and trails. The administrator the bike paths and trails are to make Easley and better place to live and work. How peachy. They connect different parts of the community that only are connected by roads up until now. It adds to the quality of life. Is that the role of our government?

Unfortunately, that has become the role of government -- insuring "quality" of life.
I found that article and read it as well. It is being funded with $533,000 in grants from the state and $133,000 in restaurant tax monies. We have roads throughout the county that are in poor condition, and we are spending nearly $700,000 on bike and walking trails. It shows you how upside down the priorities of government are.
I used to live on Highway 11 and they added a bike lane about 7 years ago. I traveled the road all the time, and maybe 1 of out 40 times I saw someone riding a bike on the road. It is nice to have, but when you think of all the problems we face, it isn’t how I’d spend our next tax dollar.
Strider, Blake Sanders called the new trails in Easley “exponentially” adding to quality of life. We have loads of people living below the poverty level in our county, and bike paths are the best way to add to quality of life? That could only be said by the senior designer of the project, which he is.
Why hasn’t anyone in the press questioned bike trail mania? The legislature gave cities the permission to raise taxes on restaurant sales by 2 percentage points if the revenue was used to improve tourism. I think all the city councils then raised the tax 2 points. The cities now have all this money coming in, and they have to find places to spend it on tourism. Then steps in the quality of life/ global warming types who want us to walk more and ride a bicycle to work. It was a match made in heaven thanks to the state legislature.
The result is money that could have remained in the pockets of the more efficient private sector or spent on high priority government projects, but is now being spent on bike paths and walking trails in mass that so few people actually use.

www.yourpickenscounty.com/courier-letters-to-the-editor-20/Above are the letters to the editor sent to the Pickens County Courier this week. The last one is my favorite. She makes the point about 1/2 way through in great detail -- It isn't one tax that is the problem. Everyone is nickel and diming her business to death one tax at a time. Like when Concerned Citizens Of Pickens County says, well it is only $24. It's not. It is that $24 on top of the multitude of taxes already being paid which is too much for many. From her letter: While much “complaining” is done about what goes on in Washington, the budget decisions that affect each of us are at the city, county and state level. I pay $400-$600 per month for hospitality tax in addition to $1,800-$2,000 for state/county sales tax. An Easley business license is $0.29 per 1,000 of last year’s sales. I pay property taxes on the building and personal property taxes on everything in the building. Beer and wine permit is $600 per year. The new tax on our utilities through Easley Combined is $65-$100 per month, and according to the budget, is about to be levied on a gas bill. I am required to have DHEC inspections and charged $80 for them. The fire department doesn’t charge for inspections; however, I am required a third-party inspection on my fire system at $200/year. Don’t forget $1,500 per month for payroll taxes. What do we get in return? The thing that most businesses have asked for in downtown is for the city to pick up our trash, but the city will not because it doesn’t have the money. Trash pickup costs $160 per month. Frankly, many downtown businesses are broke. I am.She left out she pays federal and state income tax, that is, if she makes a profit.

It is amazing how few people vote in these city elections and how close they were. In the Easley race, 1 vote would have kept this race from going to a run-off. That is the third candidate got 3 votes and forced this into a runoff between Fedder and Wright. The Norris city council race Brian Cook got 17 votes and lost by 1 vote. pickenselections.org/2015/11/03/2015-municipal-elections-results/
